INTRODUCTION

  • Surgeons have access to a variety of surgical instruments that are designed to help them in treatment of abnormalities.
  • The purpose of this presentation is to introduce the instruments that are required to perform routine surgical procedures.
  • This presentation deals primarily with a description of instruments and their uses in various ways.

CLASSIFICATION OF INSTRUMENTS

  1. General surgical instruments (common for all kind of surgeries).
  2. Procedure specific instruments of OMFS (uses limited to only OMFS).

GENERAL SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS

On the basis of type of procedure can be categorized as

  1. For keeping the sterile instruments.
  2. For picking up sterile instruments.
  3. For preparing the surgical field.
  4. For holding the drapes.
  5. For incising / dissecting the soft tissues.
  6. For holding the soft tissues.
  7. For retracting tissues.
  8. For reflecting the mucoperiosteal flap.
  9. For hemostasis.
  10. For maintaining a clean surgical field.
  11. For cutting / removing bone.
  12. For irrigation.
  13. For holding bone.
  14. For removing pathologic tissues.
  15. For draining an abscess.
  16. For maintaining drainage.
  17. For grafting skin / bone.
  18. For suturing the tissues.

                  I.                        FOR KEEPING THE STERILE INSTRUMENTS

 Surgical trays / boxes

Surgical container / drums

SURGICAL TRAYS / BOXES

  • Can be solid / perforated stainless steel / aluminum with / without lock small / medium / large.
  • Autoclavable, heat and acid resistant, improves storage, sterilization and selection of     instruments.

SURGICAL CONTAINERS / DRUMS

  • Perforated, with lock made up of  aluminium, can be small / medium / large.

FOR PICKING UP STERILE INSTRUMENTS

  •  Cheatle forceps

 Transfer forceps

CHEATLE FORCEPS

  • Long angulated instrument with

   angulated tip of blade.

  • Used for picking up sterile

   instruments from trays and

   linen from drums.

  • Stored in a container

   containing antiseptic solution.

TRANSFER FORCEPS

  • Heavy right angled forcep

   with heavy jaws.

FOR PREPARING SURGICAL FIELD

  •  Swab holder

 Steel bowl

SWAB HOLDER

  • An instrument with long

   blades expanded at ends

   forming an oblong tip.

  • Blades have central fenestrations

   and transverse serrations.

  • Use

STEEL BOWL

  • A simple stainless steel bowl

   to keep betadine gauze

   piece.

FOR HOLDING THE DRAPES

 Towel clips

TOWEL CLIPS

  • Two types

     Pinchter type (Jones)

     Forceps type (Beckhaus)

  • Jones type has spring joint whereas

   Beckhaus has locking handles.

  • Tip of both instruments curves

   towards each other, pointed and

   overlaps each other which penetrate

   drapes.

  • Used to hold drapes, stabilize suction

   tubes, motor cables etc.

Bard Parker blades

  • Commonly used ones are

   No.10 – Skin incision

No.11 – Sharp pointed, for stab

               incision

   No.12 – Hooked, for mucogingival

               procedures

   No.15 – Similar in shape to No.10

               but smaller, for intraoral

               use

  • Always held in pen grasp.
  • Designed for single use.

  • Uses
  1. To retract incised edges.
  2. To retract soft tissue mass.
  3. To allow visualisation of deeper tissues.

Suggested Uses Of Eye Bright

Eyes being on the list of most crucial organs in Ayurveda, all five elements play a role in maintaining eyesight health. Earth (prithivi) governs the muscular part with the eye, fire (tejas) rules the blood vessels, air (vayu) governs the color, h2o (apu) dominates the white area, and space (akasha) controls the tear ducts and channels.According to ayurvedic studies, eyesight troubles are caused by upsetting of one of the three doshas namely an imbalance in vata, pitta or kapha doshas.

Improper Eye care can result in the following:

Sports, gardening, camping, fairs--so numerous fun issues to do. But, do you have that itchy, watery eyes point going on? Allergy season is in full swing, too.

  • Impaired vision (need of glasses)
  • Cataracts
  • Damaged Retinas
  • Blindness

The scientific name is Euphrasia officinalis, and it's also known as Augentrostkraut, Casse-lunette, Euphraisiae herba and meadow eyebright. Varieties of eyebright are found in meadows across Europe, Asia and North America. Eyebright is really a tiny plant, growing from two to eight inches tall, with white to purplish flowers and serrated leaves. If it really is in poor soil it will likely be sparse and scattered. In very good soil it can resemble a tiny shrub. A partial parasite, it takes some of its food and h2o from the roots of other plants--usually grasses. It blooms from July through September, is harvested in late summer time and air dried.

The active ingredients in Eyebright are possibly the tannins.

Causes

  • Vata disorders in the vision often lead to dryness, bad vision and eyestrain.
  • Pitta imbalances lead to burning, inflammation, yellow pus, and redness.

TREATMENT

Ayurvedic eyesight remedy varies for every problem. Few eyesight strengthening and purifying treatments are use of triphala eyewash, eye bright infusion and netra vasti. Cooling herbs just like roses, sandalwood, coriander leaves, and Indian eyeliner (kajal) also boost vision. A drop of pure castor oil from the eyes can be healing for vata and pitta eye diseases. As shatavari is high in vitamin A and gooseberry in vitamin C these strengthen the eyes connective tissue integrity. As per Ayurveda it truly is essential to guard the eyes from chemicals, overstrain, sunlight and internal toxins. Heat too increases degeneration on the eyes connective tissue so one need to stay away from hot hair dryers, hot h2o on the face, alcohol based cosmetics around the eyes. Yogic eye exercises are indeed valuable to maintain clarity of vision. Above all a diet, rich in antioxidants for example fresh fruit and vegetables will result in strong eyes.

Used since the Middle Ages, pure eyebright leads to burning tears.
