What Kind of Wetsuits Are There?

You would not be the first if you have been confused by the sheer number and styles of wetsuits for sale. More sports have developed that use a wetsuit and changes have also taken place in the components and construction of wetsuits. Some changes however are really only due to rebranding or marketing. Selecting the wetsuit that is most suitable for us will be easier if we understand some common wetsuit expressions.

Types of Wetsuit

Spring suits – very popular as they are ideal for warmer water. These wetsuits, or shorties, cover the torso and normally have shorter sleeves for your limbs.

Long Johns – like a fullsuit with bare arms. The expressions Farmer John and Farmer Jane are sometime used.

Full suit wetsuit – this sort of wetsuit provides insulation for your entire arms and legs to maximize your insulation.

Wetsuits Vests – are handy if you need to add some extra insulation for your body.

Wetsuit Jacket – both short and long sleeved styles are available. Protects the upper body.

Wetsuit Thickness

The thickness of a wetsuit is perhaps the most crucial factor that dictates how warm it will be. There are limits to how thick a wetsuit can become before it is too restrictive. A combination of thicknesses will usually be used to provide us both warmth and flexibility.

4/3 and 5/3 are very common wetsuit thicknesses. The first number shows the body thickness, the second part the arms and legs.

Seams in Wetsuits

Wetsuits have become more technologically advanced since the earliest models that were introduced more than 50 years ago. The stitching in the seams is very critical in deciding how warm the wetsuit will be as cold water leaking into the wetsuit will lead to heat loss. Some of the most popular stitching methods are:

The Overlocked Seam

This is fairly old fashioned and is more likely to be found on a less expensive, warm water wetsuit. Overlocked stitching results in ridged seams which are not great, in both comfort and warmth. Overlocked stitching is resilient and will stand up well to regular use.

The Flatlocked Seam

Fortunately flatlocked seams do not include the ridges that overlocked seams do which makes them far more comfortable to wear. This sort of stitching does result in some cold water leakage which means that they are preferable for slightly warmer conditions.

Blindstitched

Blindstitching is technically more difficult as it avoids the material being punctured. It is used with glue to form a watertight seam. With time the watertightness of the seam will reduce. More maintenance is therefore essential to maximize the insulation of the wetsuit.

The Blindstitched & Taped Seam

This combines the blindstitched and glued seams above with tape to form a better insulated seam. Either neoprene, fabric or liquid tapes are all used as part of this kind of seam.
