Knowledge Of Chinese Gift Traditions

Chinese are a very fascinating people with their culture, customs and taboos. They are very conservative people especially when it comes to exchanging of gifts. It is both respectful and courteous to give presents to friends and family. Chinese Gifts are very popular all over the world, so it is important to learn a few things about this art.

Exchange of presents is customary and it is considered a very delicate process. When you offer a nice item to a host, they may turn you down the first few times so do not be discouraged. It is polite to decline a couple of times but they eventually come around.

Some presents are considered taboo in Asian culture like clocks. Shape objects like knives and scissors are also not welcome as these are considered bad signs. Also avoid giving items in multiples of four as this symbolizes death. The pronunciation is almost the same as death.

Giving a host fruits is a good gesture. Try to keep the number of fruits even as this is a sign of good luck. It might interest you to know that cutting a fruit in half to share with a friend is a bad sign. If you are giving presents to your colleagues, make sure they cost the same or around the same price. Good wine, solar calculators and pens are among good business gestures.

New born babies are considered a blessing and gifts are usually given during these occasions. In most cases, eggs dyed red are normally given. This is because red is considered to show happiness. Money and other presents wrapped in red are also given.

If buying Chinese gifts is too pricey for you, add a personal touch by making personalized gift yourself. That way, you can create something very unique and creative. Be sure to check for taboo presents so that you do not end up giving a bad impression.

Book help please?

For Chirstmas this year I received 60 dollars to Barns&Noble. I am very thankful for this gift because I love to read. The only problem I'm having with it is finding books to spend it on.
I am a 15 year old girl.
I prefer fistion to non-fiction, but I do enjoy some non-fictioin books.
Some of my favorite books are:
"Perks Of Being a Wall Flower" By:Stephen Chbosky
"Tuesdays With Morrie" By:Mitch Albom
"Running With scissors"By:Augusten Burroughs
"speak" By:Laurie Halse Anderson
"On the Road" By:Jack Kerouac
and
"As Nature Made Him" By:John Colapinto
Hopefully that gives some sort of idea what my style is. I would love to here suggestion on books, even if its not in my style area, I'll still look it up and think about it.

Thank you.

Sixty dollars at Barnes & Noble, eh? Well, rather than stick entirely to just books here is what I think you might enjoy. I will try to honour your "fiction preference" but other interesting stuff I will sneak in.

Firstly, buy "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck. You mentioned Kerouac's "On The Road". If you don't have it, get it. Buy Roddy Doyle's "The Commitments" and then rent the movie. That should leave you with enough to by one of the best non-fiction books of the past year or two; that being Canada's Stephen Lewis's "Race Against Time". This would be the perfect book for a teen girl who cares about the world. If you have any money left get something by P.D. James or a puzzle magazine like Sudoku. Puzzles like that are great for your brain. P. D. James is a terrific storyteller and always weaves in intriguing ideas into her books. Try "Children of Men" (the recent movie of the same name is based on this 10 year old novel).

Have fun with your gift certificate. I love getting them for book stores.
