You should generally use the correct slate, for the correct job.  Some slate roofing professionals are affiliated with a slate quarry or slate supplier, making them be more biased and try to push off that material onto purchasers.  The best way to get the right slate is to go thru a Indianapolis tile roofing professional who isn't affiliated with a quarry or provider, as they will give you the best choice while not trying to popularize the folks they work with.  You can save a lot of cash this way.  You need to confirm your slate is from a reliable source, and isn't mixed with other materials that should not be in the slate.

Another thing to avoid is the employment of laminated wood under your slate.  The employment of plywood has been around since the late 1940's, early 1950's for every kind of roofs including slate roofing.  Most roofers today don't even remember when roofs were made from solid wood.  However slate roofing done right wants to have a longevity factor that cannot be achieved by a laminated wood like plywood.  Today's roofs are often made to be brief and easy to replace.  If the plywood is bad after twenty years, it's simply replaced with the roof materials above it.  To get a proper slate roof that may last hundred or 2 hundred years, your best bet is to use solid wood for your roofing.

Other typical mistakes usually made with a slate roof are the use of the incorrect nails, insufficient head lap, the roofer not being supplied with the right tools, or cheaper quality flashing being used.  When installing new slate roofing you must use copper roofing nails, an in. and a half long.  When installing older or recycled slate you need to use hot dipper galvanized roofing nails which can last as long as one hundred years.  The head lap is the overlap each slate has with the slates two courses below, and should be between two inches and 4 inches relying on your roofs slope.  As for the proper tools, slate roofing should be done with slate cutters, hammers, roof jacks, ladder hooks, etc to make the job much easier on the roofer.  You should not mess around making your slate roof with cheap aluminum flashing however.  Copper, stainless steel, terne coated stainless, lead coated copper, lead sheet, and in some cases heavy aluminum are your best chance.
