An Operation Might Not Be The Correct Method For Treating Back Pain
At one time if someone had a lot of lower spinal pain their physician would often advise that a surgical procedure be performed to take care of the problem. Following the surgery, the patient would usually be on bed rest for a few weeks, and after that, if all went well, their back would be improved - unless it wasn’t. Previously, the majority of physicians are in agreement, there was ill-advised back operations being done. Most people weren’t any better off after the operation, and a lot were in worse shape than they were previous to the surgery.
Currently, medical trials have shown that most chronic spinal disorders, even lower back pain, may improve on its own without medical intervention, with just rest and time. In truth, for many back ailments, all other options should be considered prior to arranging for a surgical procedure on the back. Less than one percent of all people ever truly require surgery for their back ailment, even though four out of every five patients have back pain at some point in their life.
Who Is In Need of A Back Operation?
Generally, doctors recommend that an operation should only be considered if other techniques have been first attempted and were ineffective at alleviating the back pain (or if the pain returns), the pain is drastically impacting a patient's every day activities, or if left untreated the back pain could worsen into a more chronic state.
Non-Surgical Options
Physical rehabilitation can be an exceptional means to assist the back and spine in its strengthening process. Along with unique exercise routines, many times the physical therapist will use additional procedures, such as heat or cold therapy that eases swelling and pain and muscle spasms, ultrasounds that utilize sound waves to treat and promote circulation while at the same time reducing swelling, pain and muscle spasms, massage, spinal traction, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) that uses a painless electrical current on specific nerves to alleviate soreness and improve mobility of the back, and water therapy.
A large number of patients find relief by using medication to relieve their back aches. There are several types, some non-prescription and some that require a prescription. They include muscle relaxants, analgesics and NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
Can you take Body Modification too far?
I know we joke around alot here in tattoos but the question begs to be asked. Can you take body modification too far and where is that line for you? For some anything more that a single tattoo is too far .......for others a back piece or sleeves are over the top. And what about piercings...is there a limit? If tattooing is acceptable what about scarification ......branding?
And then of course you have those who take it even further....100% coverage of the body in ink.....too much? Surgical changes to the body including tongue splitting....ears pointed....foreign objects implanted under the skin? If these are fine what about self amputation, castration or even trephination? All of these things are practiced on an individual or cultural basis all over the world. Should the individual have complete control of his body or should lines be drawn?
I think it all depends on the individual. I do not personally agree with the while tongue splitting, voluntary amputation, ect, but to each their own.
I have a friend that got back from Iraq about 2 years ago. He had PTSD really bad, and as an escape, he went on a tattooing/piercing spree. To the point that he would get 2-3 piercings done, then go to another shop to get tatted the same day. It really scared me and my fiance, and when he got to the point that he wanted to do suspensions, we kinda had to sit down with him, and talk about what his motives were, and what he wanted to get out of doing things like this. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love piercings and tattoos just as much as the next guy, but I felt that he was doing modicications for the wrong reasons. If he actually went through the suspension, botu me and my fiance were going to be there to support him, and to be there to put our own minds at ease, but when we all talked about it, he decided that really his intentions were to inflict pain on himself as punishment.
It is cases like these that make me weary. I mean I pierce for a living, but those people that come in and want an 8 gauge conch piercing, and they have no tattoos, or other piercings, it really makes me wonder.......
I have had friends that have had inplants in their head, and tons of other places, but they were in the industry, and were able to ahow off their mosifications in a safe environment, but I also know an individual that had his nipples and aeroleas removed, and that makes me wonder.
OK, I'll stop now, this is one of my favorite discussions.....
