Nurses Command High Salaries In This High Demand Field

Registered nurses and nursing students who enjoy working independently and feel they might make sound clinical decisions have opportunities to take their nursing responsibilities and their income levels up a notch. The Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates that advanced practice registered nurses are to be in demand into 2018. Nursing programs in advanced practice specialties can help produce graduates to meet that demand letting the grads quickly monetize their online university degree.

With nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, certified nurse midwives and nurse anesthetists among the advanced practice registered nurses, students have a wide variety of nursing programs from which to choose. Those with an interest in addressing physical and mental health problems, providing consultations, carrying out research and working in education and administration might find a clinical nurse specialist program appealing, the American Nurses Association website suggests. Nurse practitioner programs might be better suited to students interested in providing primary and preventive health care services, diagnosing and treating minor illnesses and injuries and, perhaps, prescribing medication. There are also advanced practice specialty programs for certified nurse-midwives who work in gynecology and obstetrics and for certified registered nurse anesthetists who, according to the American Nurses Association, each year administer more than half of all anesthetics that patients receive.

If information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics is any indication, it's a good time to work toward a nursing degree. The nursing occupation as a whole into 2018 is expected to see some of the fastest employment growth, Bureau of Labor Statistics information shows. The Labor Bureau expects that registered nurses with at least a bachelors degree are to be better positioned for jobs than non-degree holders. Advanced practice registered nurses, the agency reports, are to experience great demand particularly in medically under-served communities such as rural areas and inner cities.

Colleges and universities throughout the country offer advanced practice specialty nursing programs that might make it more convenient, and less timely, for students to obtain advanced degrees. Some nursing programs are accelerated, while others feature online degree components. Students interested in these nursing programs can minimize the cost of the investment by obtaining scholarships, fellowships and grants. After they obtain an advanced practice specialty nursing degree, they might expect to earn an average of about $70,000 to $92,000 a year, online salary surveys suggest.

Some campus and online degree programs, including an offering from American Sentinel University, are known as “RN to MSN” programs, and they allow registered nurses to advance directly from a hospital diploma or associates degree to a masters degree. Boston-based Northeastern University, on the other hand, offers traditional and accelerated masters degree programs with a nurse anesthesia specialty, as well as a US Army Graduate Program in Nurse Anesthesia. Thanks to a Department of Health and Human Services grant to increase its program size and diversity, Northeastern University also provides many of its students, grants, even stipends. Registered nurse anesthetists are also the highest paid nurses, according to the National League for Nursing. In Massachusetts, the average salary for nurse anesthetists is between $130,000 and $150,000 a year, an August article in the Boston Herald noted.

The University of Cincinnati and Tennessee-based Vanderbilt University also provide flexible options for students seeking masters degrees in advanced practice specialties, according to their websites. At Vanderbilt University, an acute care nurse practitioner program for instance, allows registered nurses with two years of experience to work toward a masters degree without having to relocate or give up employment, its website shows. Vanderbilt University students in this nursing specialty program through online conferencing take courses on campus in blocks of time so that they're not away from home for extended periods and, where possible, are placed in clinical programs near where they live.

Most registered nurses begin as staff nurses in hospitals and, with experience and good performance, often move to other settings or are promoted to positions with more responsibility, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Where 18 percent of registered nurses in 1977 had a bachelors degree, more than 34 percent had at least that by 2004, the American Nurses Association reports. The Tri-Council for Nursing in 2010 suggested that nurses advance their education to the graduate level so that they might help fill an urgent need in areas such as advanced practice registered nursing. This lets nurses apply what they learned for their nursing school right away.

There are many flexible education options these days. Nurses who follow through with the Tri-Council's recommendation and pursue advanced degrees might enhance existing skills and deepen their knowledge. Entering advanced practice specialties with the appropriate nursing degrees obtained, nurses might find themselves in more stable careers that provide a more comfortable income – and that, in many instances, fills a great and much appreciated need allowing them to take advantage right away of their online degree.
