Learn to Focus Through Pat Mesiti
Successful people have great focus. They know what their strengths
are and choose to do only what they're good at. Life coach and mentor,
Pat Mesiti reveals that it was when he did too much that he started
being less effective.
"You can't be the best at everything." - Pat Mesiti
There was a time when Pat Mesiti ran 6 organisations and sat on all
of the companies boards, whist managing many other activities. He admits that
it was in doing too much and spreading himself too thin that he lost
focus but he eventually learned from his mistake.
FOCUS FOR STRENGTH
Your busy lifestyle may mean doing several things at the same time.
While multi tasking may eventually help you get things done, you may
notice that your strength is sapped at the end of the day, making it
harder to take any pleasure out of your life outside business and working. On
the other hand, doing things a step at a time enables you to focus
clearly on any endeavor, resulting in better outcomes while leaving
you enough energy to enjoy life after work.
FOCUS FOR BETTER QUALITY
A day only has so many hours for you to spend doing a limited number
of activities. This includes enough time for sleeping, eating, bathing
and other personal necessities. People who try to do too much in one
day end up doing things haphazardly as they rush to meet their
schedules. When the quality of your work or output suffers, you end up
doing things all over again. What is more important than getting so
much work done is getting your work done correctly the first time around.
FOCUS ON BEING GOOD AT ONE THING
Pat Mesiti's message is for you to set your sights on being good at
one thing. You may try to know a little bit of everything but you
won't get as much fulfillment as when you are a master or specialist
at something. To illustrate, doctors study general medicine but end up
specializing in a particular field like neurosurgery, pediatrics or
cardiology after leaving school. Pat Mesiti also cites the case of
athletes who excel in a specific event because their skills and
training are focused on it. Notice that it is when an athlete is
distracted during training or a competition that he may end up
failing.
TIPS FOR BETTER FOCUS
Pat Mesiti recommends that you review what's in your life right now.
You must prioritize your activities, and remove those that
do not help you reach your goals. Don't take on more than you can
handle. Don't bite off more than you can chew. When you prune some
tasks from your list of work to do, you can then relax to a
more rewarding life.
What do I need to do to become a complete cardiologist or a sub-specialist?
I am currently doing MBBS in Pakistan and the look forward on doing my specialty and sub specialty from USA. So please guide me on the following questions:
1. After MBBS, I undertake how many steps of USMLE to qualify to be the equivalent of USA M.D.?
2. After that, what do I have to do in order to specialize in , say, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery or other sub specialty?
3. What are the average expenses of the specialty and sub specialty programs?
4. Can I do a job while specializing?
I am currently a 2nd year cardiology fellow in the U.S.
First you need to pass USMLE Steps 1 and 2 prior to applying for residency training. Then during you residency, you need to pass USMLE Step 3 during your first year.
If you want to become a cardiologist (a subspecialty of internal medicine), then you have to complete an internal medicine residency in the U.S., which is 3 years long. Next, you have to apply for a cardiology fellowship, which is another 3 years of training. However, if you want to further specialize (interventional, electrophysiology, imaging, and heart transplant are some examples) after your general cardiology fellowship, you have to apply again which is usually another year of training. Now, if you become an interventionalist and want to do peripheral vascular interventions, that is an additional year of training.
However, if you want to become a cardiothoracic surgeon then you need to complete a surgery residency in the U.S., which is 5 years long. Then apply for a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship which is another 2 years.
There are no expenses for the training programs other than paying for lodging and airfare to go on interviews. You get paid for working long hours during your training, but salary is about $42,000-$56,000 depending on how many years of training you have and where you are located in the U.S.
During fellowship, you can usually moonlight to make extra money. However, the policy on moonlighting during residency varies from program to program.
Hope this helps.
