Why I Habitually Record Phone Calls
A good mate of mine and I were enjoying coffee at my place, just chatting, when she discussed that when she was little she used to prank telephone call boys quite a lot. I was shocked! This is a not a buddy I'd have predicted this behaviour from, for she's shy and conservative. We'd been friends for over a year now, however, and this was the first I had ever heard about her youth.
Of course I was thrilled and needed to hear more. She got raised in Natick, Massachusetts and was very shy around boys. She doesn't have many buddies but claimed the anonymity of the phone allowed her to call boys for her pals and learn who they liked.
I asked her how she got the boys to trust her and she said it was easy to pretend she went to a different school and gain their trust that way. Did you record phone calls? I asked, still incredulous. I kept having trouble picturing this shy friend of mine having the guts to make these prank telephone calls. I knew I would not be in a position to do something so deceitful without laughing and blowing my cover.
Did you disguise your voice at all? I asked. My friend said that she was so quiet in class that not one of the boys she called recognized her voice. But I needed to hear some of the specific stories before I was prepared to truly believe this is what she'd done. She told me that they did not have the technology then to record phone calls unless you recorded them with an audiocassette. I believe some corporations and radio shows had the technology, she continued, but this was in the 1970s so there was not as much technology and cellular phones were way in the future.
She revealed that one time she pretended she was Lily Donovan from the close by James Truck Buren High College, and called Tommy for her buddy Bethany. Bethany had a crush on Tommy, you see, and she needed to discover if Tommy liked her. I needed to know what went down next, so I kept egging her on even though I could see she was definitely beginning to get uncomfortable. How old were you? We were all eleven or twelve. So what did he say? He said he had a crush on Tina, and then when I asked about Bethany he announced that he believed she was all right.
My friend knew what to get on with next. Tina has a crush on Joey, she told Tommy, and instructed him to meet them all at the roller skating rink on Thursday at 7pm. Bethany showed up and Tommy showed up, and they started talking. It is a set up, and they ended up getting together over the bafflement of who had asked if they'd meet there. My friend had asked them both over and they ended up, years later, and after breaking up and getting together again many several times over the years, marrying!
I wished they'd had the technology to record phone calls then so that I could hear that initial telephone call. And nobody was any the wiser about Lily Donovan!
Todd Lewis likes any sort of phone recorder devices. If you need to record phone calls then visit his site for all of the gadgets.
What do you think of this Plot?
I am a developing a Historical Fiction Novel and I want to know what you think of my plot so far. The setting spans the Civil War and centers around Abraham Lincoln. I plan not to tell the story of the Civil War in the straight-forward historical way.
"Since its formation, the United States of America has kept an illusive secret from the world, and the only one who knew of this was the President himself. But when a past evil comes to haunt America, this secret is left to Martin Van Buren alone. Two Decades later, Abraham Lincoln becomes President at a time of great peril. He stumbles upon a secret long forgotten. Lincoln must then choose whether to utilize this secret to save the country from total separation or risk its ruin to prevent the return of an evil from the past."
I also have though of some titles but I am unsure which one is better:
"The Executive Secret"
"The Blood of Our Fathers"
"What our Fathers Did Not Tell You"
So what do you think?
Very good!
Titles
The blood of our fathers

Two families were displaced from an Ogden home after a 4-year-old playing with
a lighter set a bed on fire Saturday. Ogden Fire Chief Mike Mathieu said the
fire began just after 10 a.m. at 604 S. Van Buren in one of the back rooms of
the house while the family was cooking breakfast. The child was by himself and
playing with a lighter and lit some bedding material, Mathieu said. After the
fire started and flames began to engulf the room, the child ran to safety. The
fire spread rapidly through th...
