Some Tips About The Havanese Breed
Recognized as the national dog of Cuba, the Havanese breed of dogs originates from this island. The history of the Havanese is nearly as old as the exploration of America itself. Following Columbus, one group of early European settlers to Cuba came from Tenerife, itself a small island under Spanish rule in the chain of islands now collectively known as the Canary Islands. These European settlers came to Cuba accompanied by different animals they owned in Tenerife, including the dogs which are believed to be the ancestors of the Havanese dogs. The original name of these dogs was Blanquito de la Hablana, or the Havanese Silk Dog, and as a result of their cossbreeding with French and German Poodles, a new breed with a new name appeared. Facing a serious threat as a distinct breed following the political and social upheaval of the Cuban Revolution, the breed was pulled back from the brink of extinction by a concerned breeder in America with a group of only 11 Havanese. Since that time their number increased as much as the Havanese breed regularly ranks in the top 50 of registered breeds in America based on total numbers.
A “Tail” Of The Tape: Size, Color And General Description
If you’re looking for a large, short-coated, physically imposing dog then the Havanese is, well, it’s not the right dog for you. They are small, long-haired, sturdy little animals. These dogs measure between 8 to 11 inches in height and between 7 to 13 pounds in weight and are known as toy dogs or lap dogs. They look slightly longer than they are tall when fully growned.
The ancestor of the Havanese, the earlier Havanese Silk Dog was uniformly white in color, modern Havanese dog have many different colors or combination of two to three colors. The most commonly met colors of the coats of these dogs are silver, white, cream, blue, black and gold. The eyes of the Havanese are usually dark, but chocolate colored Havanese may have lighter eyes. Their coates are generally long and silky. They have two types of coats, an undercoat and an outer coat, but the two of them are soft and their hair feels very light to the touch. Again, this coat design allows them to tolerate heat very well and serves to protect them against the sun (good to have if you’ve lived on a tropical island for generations!).
Though not typical for the breed, some Havanese born with short coats. This is the way some recesive gene responsible for the short lenght of the coat expresses from time to time. These short-haired dogs (also known as a Shavanese) have the same temperament and other physical characteristics of the more common long-haired variety of the Havanese.
They are vivid little dogs that enjoy outdoors activities and need regular exercise, but are best suited to living indoors. Like most smaller dogs, the life span of the Havanese is relatively long (typically 14 years or more). Unlike some toy breeds which do not do well around very young children, Havanese have a reputation for being a suitable playmate for children of all ages. This makes it a particularly good choice of pet for families who have young ones underfoot and gives potential owners (and parents) a reliable idea of what to expect owning a Havanese. Estate sale provides a rare look at the world of Justice Potter Stewart (Washington Post)
The most committed arrived about 4 a.m., when the neighborhood of Spring
Valley was still dark and coated with frost. When the doors opened six hours
later, they poured into the three-story brick house — and thus commenced a
sort of Black Friday for blue bloods.
It was a rare glimpse into the inner chambers of old Washington society: an
estate sale at the home of the late Potter Stewart, who served as a U.S.
Supreme Court justice from 1958 to 1981. Nominated by then-President Dwight D.
Eisenhower, the Michigan native was often the swing vote on divided rulings.
