How to take gastric biospy specimens correctly on endoscopy.?
Should specimens be put into formalin straight from the biopsy forceps and the forceps then rinsed in sterile water or should they be removed with a sterile needle. Are there any health risks from formalin entering the body from the taking of these specimens.
Is there any research available on the health and safety issue on this topic.
Formalin contains 40% formaldehyde, a suspected carcinogen that is everywhere. Your question implies that the assistant is removing the biopsy specimen by shaking the forceps tip into the formalin-containing specimen container, then rinsing the tip in sterile water, and then the biopsy forceps are used to obtain another specimen in the patient. As long as you rinse, you're probably okay as it is chronic exposure or large amounts that cause the toxic/cancer effects.
